Coaching With Spirit

As coach or as client contemplate a spiritless coaching experience: No zest. No humor. “Just the facts, ma’am”; A progression of steps; Accomplishments but no celebrations. Tick marks on a checklist. Life without spirit is a bland, boring, mechanical existence. This is not the stuff of Coaching School Results! Of course, all involved in a coaching experience are with spirit!

Typically, the emphasis in coaching focuses upon what the client wants to have or wants to do. The client’s acquisitions could be commodities or titles or positions. The client’s skills typically become important because their proficient use will increase the likelihood of obtaining a desired acquisition. A skilled coach can dutifully convey a client through skill learning to obtain innumerable acquisitions. And even if there are appropriate celebrations along the way, lots of humor, and zestful conversation the coaching experience will be spiritless without attention to what the client wants to be.

A person’s being includes values, life-meaning, life purpose, his/her essence. It is the “I am”. Coaching For Results teaches Covey’s conception that what a person has, flows from what the person does, which in turn flows from who the person is. But this isn’t an inevitable flowing. Many people have more acquisitions than they know what to do with and are highly skilled but are disconnected from who s/he is. “My job is to help people at various stages along this path…I work with successful professionals. Unfortunately, they attribute their success to their crazy work style…They fear that if they change this work style, success will vanish…At the core of this syndrome is people’s inability to be clear on what they truly value or to know their true value and contribution.” (Elaine Gagne, Coaching With Spirit by Teri-E Belf). One cannot be concerned with being and not also be involved with spirit. Reflection upon values, meaning, and purpose is spiritual work.

Without spirit a person can be a trainer teaching a client new skills and without spirit a person can be a purchasing agent assisting the client with acquisitions. But a life coach conveys the client to connectivity: Aligning the flow from “be” to “do” to “have”. Stringing “life purpose” with “actions” and with “acquisitions”. What the client becomes is a life coach’s reason for existence and a client’s rightful expectation. Only when we coach with spirit are we life coaching – Coaching For Results!
