Insight, Clarity, Intention, Action! I love to travel! One of the things I love most is deciding on the destination of my next trip, and then getting focused about when I will go and what I will see and do while there. I become intentional about making the trip happen. It has become increasingly clear to me that if I don’t choose a destination and schedule my travel I am unlikely to end up where I want to go. The same holds true when planning a journey for your school. If you are not intentional about where you are headed and when you want to get there, it is unlikely that you will arrive. Here’s a story about a principal who became very intentional about creating a different school culture on her campus. We’ll call her Helen. After assessing the current situation, Helen determined that there was low trust among staff, students, and within the community which affected teaching and learning on a daily basis. Her insight was that one cause of the situation was the manner with which people spoke to one another. At the beginning of the year, Helen made her intentions clear to everyone on the staff. One of her expectations was that staff, students, and parents would speak to each other in a respectful tone of voice. She involved the staff in brainstorming and choosing ways to address this issue whenever it occurred anywhere on campus. The staff became intentional about using these strategies. Staff, students, and parents soon began speaking to one another more respectfully, and the school culture began to change. What caused the change?
The burst of energy we get from our insight inspires change but is insufficient. Real, sustainable change does not happen without the intent to act in a way that brings desired results.
