ACT
AS IF
Putting Positive Presuppositions into ACTION
The
power of using positive presuppositions in our language is something that
many of us are aware of and can see positive results in action. To carry
this to the next step of ACTING AS IF the presupposition is in place takes
it to the next level – reality.
In working with School-Based
Coaches, we talk about establishing a trusting environment for positive
changes to grow. We practice using
positive presuppositions
in our language; for example, “as you are planning for the various
levels of students in your class, how might you present your lesson on…”.
But do we really expect that to happen and do we ACT AS IF it will?
We know from the research
in Neuro-Linguistic Programming that the mind and body are one system
and that external behavior is the
result of internal
behavior. When we set goals, we suggest that folks ACT AS IF they had attained
the goal. My questioning mind argued against this. How can I ACT AS IF I
have or can do something when it seems that I really don’t. And yet,
when we come to the understanding that we can ACT AS IF we are on the path
to the getting or having, our outlook seems to change. The path opens up
to us and new possibilities show themselves.
If we think of this
ACTING AS IF as planting a seed of mind/body awareness that contains all
of the DNA plus the physical ability to grow
and create,
we can watch the process progress. The seed contains our respectful core
values; those core values that are respectful of the highest good for all.
As we plant the seed in fertile soil it is our action to fill a void - nature’s
way of sustaining life. Nature abhors a vacuum. We fill the vacuum or fertile
soil with the seed of our positive intentions, our ACTING AS IF. This action
is “watering the seed” which now springs into life, filling
the void with a beautiful flower or new idea. As the flower/idea grows it
requires nurturing that comes from both within the seed – the respectful
core values, and from outside nurturing – purposeful coaching and
positive action. Our flower continues to grow and when the environment is
ripe it bursts into bloom producing tangible results, new action and awareness.
We celebrate this flowering with the realization that new seed is contained
in the flower that will continue our cycle of positive intention and produce
a garden of amazing blooms.
And all of this from ACT AS IF.
