The Gift of …..Powerful Speaking! Just listening is one of the most generous gifts one can offer another. The other side of the “just listen” coin is powerful speaking. Communication is a two- or-more-way street. The crux of accurate, meaningful communication is that the person who has the most skill has the most responsibility in making certain that each person is completely understood. So, in addition to listening until you thoroughly understand the speaker, you will want to speak until you are thoroughly understood. This may mean stating your feelings or position in more than one way, or using different words or metaphors that will be understood by your listener. It may mean several repetitions of your message and checking the perceptions of the listener until you are clearly heard. It definitely means not stepping over a misunderstanding because you have not adequately spoken. The past is done, so powerful speaking focuses on the present and future. It is about how you feel now, and what you want now and in the future. Very often, powerful speaking is about your own standards and boundaries. It may include letting others know that you have raised your standards and strengthened your boundaries so that you are operating at a different level than you were previously. It may be that you are speaking your truth, rather than holding back. It may mean that you are giving up blame and guilt in order to move into a more proactive way of living and being. As a coach, it is important to be clear about your standards and boundaries regarding the coaching relationship. It is important to speak your truth without blame or judgment. It is crucial to provide the space for your client to speak powerfully. Choosing the strategy of speaking powerfully is one of the ways individuals move into a “cleaner” way of being and communicating.
